The creation of the new rite gradually unfolded over the course of twenty years through a series of incremental liturgical changes overseen by Fr. Annibale Bugnini, who would write Vatican II's Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, implement it as the head of Consilium, and finally preside over the formulation of the 1969 Novus Ordo Missae of Paul VI.

It is a calamity because Monsignore Annibale Bugnini drew up that Mass deliberately to create a non-Catholic ceremony. A difficulty with the New Mass is that it has given rise to invalid Masses. It has also removed people's minds from the central point of the Mass, the Sacrifice at Calvary. It is now a communal meal, held at a table. The priest is the minister. It's not without reason that St. John Chrysostom, Doctor of the Church, declares, "The corridors of hell are paved with the skulls of bishops."
